Sue Smith

I’m Sue C. Smith, and I’ve been writing songs for the Church for over four decades. In that time, I’ve had the joy of writing 23 #1 songs and more than 100 musicals, many of them for Daywind Music. My love for music started early, my dad led the music at our church, and my mom taught adult Sunday school. I’ve always been drawn to the power of words, especially the way a lyric can move hearts. Early in my career, an established writer took a chance on me and helped open doors, and that act of generosity inspired my late husband John and me to start Write About Jesus, a 3-day annual workshop where aspiring writers learn from some of the best Christian songwriters and publishers in the industry. In 2025, we’ll celebrate our 26th year. Over the years, I’ve received six Dove Awards and have had the privilege of teaching songwriting in Myanmar, India, Uganda, and across the U.S. I still love getting in a room, or hopping on Zoom, to write a new song. Being part of In Every Generation was an energizing experience. I especially loved meeting new co-writers and writing “on assignment.” I spent 20 years living in Missouri and drove back and forth to Nashville almost every other week before finally moving here in 2021.
